3. Short-Term Medical (STM) Plans
Short-term medical plans are temporary, non-ACA-compliant plans designed for coverage gaps. They are NOT what we sell, but you need to understand them.
- Duration: Typically 90 days; some states allow longer
- Use case: Between jobs, waiting for employer coverage, transitioning life events
- Cost: Very low premiums, quick approval
- Limitations: Exclude pre-existing conditions, maternity, mental health; no ACA consumer protections
- Example: Aflac is the most well-known STM provider
