Brief History of Health Insurance in the US

The concept of health insurance in the U.S. emerged in the early 20th century as medical costs began to rise. In the 1920s, hospitals introduced prepaid plans for basic care, laying the foundation for modern insurance. The 1930s saw the creation of Blue Cross Blue Shield, offering affordable group coverage through employers. During World War II, wage controls led employers to offer health insurance as a benefit, making employer-sponsored insurance (ESI) the dominant model, covering 70% of Americans by the 1960s.

In 1965, Medicare and Medicaid were established to provide coverage for the elderly, disabled, and low-income individuals, expanding access to millions. However, challenges like pre-existing condition exclusions and high costs persisted in the private market. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) of 2010 transformed the landscape by mandating coverage, creating insurance Marketplaces, and introducing subsidies, reducing the uninsured rate from 16% in 2010 to 8% by 2016. Today, the U.S. health insurance system blends public programs, ACA plans, and private options, with brokers like American Ally guiding clients to the best solutions.
